SUSAN CAROL DAVIS | President

I’m a home town performing/visual artist who relocated to Denton after twenty-five years of living in Tennessee and Southern California. Artists Enclave is the most meaningful association of kindred creative spirits that I have ever been a part of. Serving as our Board President is an honor and one that has provided opportunities to collaborate with other area arts nonprofits and inspiring artists of all ages. I enjoy handling our social media postings and planning special events most of all.

Making documentary films, directing theatre and being in front of the camera as a film/television actress are my creative channels that spark life within and without. Check out my latest directorial project on YouTube – The Take Away Short film.

Geena and Dillon Davis, my canine children, are truly the heart of my home. Think of black and white television’s “Lassie” and you’ll visualize what my Rough Collie furry babies are all about!

RAYMOND PAHLER | Secretary

Originally from Pittsburgh PA, I was born to be an artist.  It was what came easily and most naturally to me.  In high school I was encouraged to get a “Real” career and so majored in Chemical Engineering while minoring in art at college. I chased my professional career around the country ending up in Denton in 1994.  I retired as a senior engineering executive in the plastics industry in 2019.  I concurrently kept my art interests alive along the way and won many awards in juried competitions, and now I spend most of my time on art. A former UNT adjunct professor in mechanical engineering, I have also taught several art related classes for UNT’s OLLIE program for seniors.

Looking back, I see that all of my 2D art has been realistic, and all of my sculpture has been abstract.  Go figure! I have worked in just about every medium along the way as well as becoming an experienced woodworker.  My current focus is on Computer art, and finding interesting ways of using recycled materials such as business cards, paint stir sticks, and wine bottles to name a few.

My wife of 53 years, Debbie, and I live in Aubrey with our current pooch, Phoebe.

CAROL ROWLEY | Treasurer

We moved to Denton in January 1998 and have enjoyed living here since. In late 2000 I took watercolor lessons so I could think more in my “right side” brain (and relax?). I am retired. My career jobs involved teaching science, paralegal law firm work, and teaching computer software using basic accounting. Art became a fun creative adventure.

Together my husband and I have lived in 9 states (and gardened in all of them!). We have traveled to all 50 USA states. While in Denton I have been the Treasurer of three other non-profits. Prior to that I forget how many other volunteer treasurer jobs I had!

I recently joined Artists Enclave in the treasurer role because - well, because I went to the annual meeting where they asked for help. I look forward to being involved.

JON BLACK | Member at Large

My roots in Denton are at once both old and recent. I was raised here and completed my undergrad at UNT. In 2023, after more than a quarter-century away, I returned. As a creator, I am best-known as an author of award-winning historical fiction, often incorporating supernatural, horror, or pulp elements.

Earlier this year, I began actively exploring the visual arts for the first time and am proud to have works exhibited in Denton, Dallas, and Austin. This summer, I joined the Artist Enclave Board, in part with a mandate to increase the enclave’s written and spoken word programming. It is a joy and honor to be part of an organization which works so hard to support and create opportunities for creatives of all kinds and at all levels of experience in Denton. I love my fellow Enclavistas!

ZINA MARTIN | Member at Large

I am originally from Houston, Texas, and I am the Owner and Chief Design Impressionista of House of Zina. I work as a freelance artist and designer, and I am also a former art educator. Three years ago, I moved to Denton, where I completed my first degree in December 2024 alongside my youngest daughter, which was a deeply meaningful milestone for both of us.

I taught for more than six years in Cedar Hill ISD and previously instructed at several private schools, where I mentored students in developing their artistic skills and creative confidence. I am also the founder of A Purple Notion: A Studio Experience, a creative studio formerly located in Cedar Hill, Texas, known for its innovative arts programming and community-centered events.

My work includes residential and commercial murals, published book illustration, and private instruction. I am passionate about transforming imaginative ideas into unique, one-of-a-kind artistic creations. I like to consider myself a Jill of All Trades, always exploring, experimenting, and bringing new creative notions to life.

PAULA MCCLURG | Member at Large

Born and raised in Lewisville, Texas, I've spent most of my life in the DFW area, settling in Argyle, TX in 2003, where I continue to reside. While my professional career has been primarily in Tech Operations, Strategy, and Planning, I've always felt an innate need to create in my personal life.

My artistic journey has involved experimenting with various media, leading to a self-directed training path through local studio classes, workspace, and online resources.  Recognizing the critical value of art and creation in maintaining my own sanity and balance, as well as the many varied benefits the arts provide to our local community, I am deeply committed to supporting fellow creators and promoting the arts.  It is with great pleasure that I serve on the board of Artists Enclave Denton County, a dedicated non-profit arts organization, helping to advance this vital mission.

It is my pleasure and honor to be part of an amazing team of creatives at the Artists Enclave of Denton – an organization which strives to provide opportunities to artists of various backgrounds and interests.

I am a documentary linguist, creative writer and multidisciplinary artist. I was born and raised in Srinagar, the historical city in Kashmir (India) and a spiritual center of the region known for traditional arts, handicrafts, papier-mâché, wood carving, carpet weaving, and jewel making. I began my professional journey as a playwright for the state television Doordarshan in the mid 1990’s. Owing to continued political instability in Kashmir, I moved to Delhi in 1997 in pursuit of higher education. My professional journey took me to the United States in 2001 as a doctoral student at UT Austin. In 2006 Denton became my future home when I joined the University of North Texas as a faculty in the Linguistics program.
